A Tollcross care home has won a national award after kind-hearted residents opened a food bank service to help those in need.
Haydale Care Home received the award for their Corbett Community Cupboard at the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) ceremony held in London on Friday October, 6. The home was recognised in the ‘Connected Communities’ category after launching a food bank in January which they say has already helped hundreds of families in the East End of Glasgow.
The food bank offers a variety of tinned foods, juices, long-life milk, biscuits and snacks as well as household essentials including nappies and winter jackets. Started as a way to thank the community for their support during the multiple coronavirus lockdowns, the service is run by residents with help from co-ordinators Kirstin Millar and Isabel Cummings.
Speaking after the ceremony Isabel said: “Being nominated was a great achievement and we were really happy not only for us but for the residents who worked so hard on this project.

“To win has been a great accomplishment for everyone involved.”
Haydale is home to around 55 residents and provides care for elderly people, residents living with dementia and younger adults with learning disabilities.
Kirstin, who joined her colleague at the awards night added: “We wanted to give back to our local community, we never expected a thank you for it but to receive this award has been the biggest thank you we could ever have asked for.
“The judges told us that when they saw our entry they couldn’t not vote for us. We are now focusing on our next project which is to provide a warm and welcoming Winter Hub where local vulnerable people can meet and eat for a few hours and socialise in a safe and friendly environment.”
