Britain’s ‘best Small Town’ Is Ridiculously Pretty And Looks Frozen In Time

Rye has been lauded as a must-see staycation spot thanks to its rural charm, winding streets, medieval architecture and proximity to the beach.

The East Sussex town has a raft of attractions to see when you visit and now it’s been named top of the list of English towns to live in by a popular YouTube channel.

Learning Canteen said of the gorgeous little town: “You can’t ever get sick of walking through cobblestone streets like those in Rye, which are lined with charmingly crooked houses.

Fans of literature can wander in the footsteps of legendary former residents like Henry James and E.F. Benson who drew inspiration from the tranquill surroundings.

The bustling cultural scene draws lovers of art to the Rye Art Gallery, which displays a slate of local and national artists.

A short walk out of the town visitors will find the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve which is blessed with fantastic shingle beaches.

Nature lovers can get their fix of wildlife and can bask in the serenity of the reserve’s untouched landscapes.

Tripadvisor users have left glowing reviews of the town. One said of the famous Mermaid Street: “Even though we had to walk up hill on cobbled streets to it. The walk was well worth it. Such a beautiful street.”

Another said: “We visited morning, noon and evening and were lucky enough to find this magical street almost empty at times!

“Be sure to photograph every angle because this cobblestone street lined with the cutest cottages with unique names will call you back again and again!”
