Organisation is key to any successful move. This is especially true when it comes time to pack your belongings. We have a list of packing materials and boxes to help you get started on your move.
What are the best boxes you can use to move house?

What kind of packing box should I choose?

Use sturdy boxes. It is best to use boxes that are specifically designed for moving.

What about supermarket boxes?

It depends on how sturdy the box is. Less boxes can be dropped, dropped, or wet during a move.

Choose the strongest packaging material you can find. Also, make sure to check for any odours caused by previous contents.

What size is the best moving box for me?

It depends entirely on the contents of your move, so you may need multiple boxes. These types of boxes are what we use most often:

Standard (medium size) packing box

Box size: 45cmx47cmx51cm
These are used for packaging china, glassware, toys and pans as well as small appliances.
Usually contains: the contents of one single kitchen cupboard

Small packing box

Size: 45cmx33cmx33cmx33cm
It is commonly used to: Pack books, records or tools; foodtuffs; heavy items; bottles
The typical shelf size is 3ft.

Large packing container

Box size: 46cm, 47cm, 78cm
Common uses: Linen, folded clothes, soft toys
Typically, holds: 1 bed bedding

Lay flat packing box

88cm x 45cm, x 26cm
These are typically used to fold linens, curtains, and folded clothes.
Typically, it holds: A 2ft rail of clothes or 2 drawers

Wardrobe cartons

Allow you clothes to be loaded on hangars so they arrive at their new homes crease-free.

Box size: These cartons can be ordered in either 104cm or125cm lengths.
The average hangs 1.5-2ft worth of clothes.

Picture/Mirror carts

Special narrow boxes that can wrap individual mirrors or groups of them.

Use the right size box for your most common items

The best box for packing glass and china?

A standard (medium-sized) packing box.

The best book packaging box

A small, lightweight packing box. Also known as a “book carton”. Books can be very heavy, so it might not be possible to lift a larger box.
What’s the best way to store clothes?

A large packing container. These can be in a standard taller size or laid flat. OR

A wardrobe container. These containers allow you hang clothes easily without having to take them down and fold them.
What’s the best box for packing frames

For padding, use a picture case or large packaging box that contains soft items such as pillows/pillows.

What other packing materials will I need to move my home?

Not only will you need packing boxes, but also these:

Unprinted packing paper is best for wrapping fragile items, stuffing in gaps and preventing movement.
Bubble wrap is a great way to add extra padding to fragile items
Packing tape — wide, strong tape to seal your box
Permanent Marker: To label boxes (or labels if it’s not possible to write directly on them).

Where can I find packing boxes that are suitable for moving?

You can often buy packing boxes from your local removal company. Your company might offer you a choice between new and used boxes. These boxes are specially made to move house and will give you the peace of mind knowing that they are sturdy.

If you don’t need a moving company, you can ask local movers if they will only sell you boxes. Most will also have a store that sells packing materials for self-service mover. You can also search online to purchase packing materials.

Are there any circumstances when professional removal packers should be used?

There is no set time limit. It’s best to hire a professional to pack your belongings.

You own a substantial property
You have many fragile or valuable items
You don’t have much time
It is a long distance move that will require a longer travel time.
You are moving to another country
You’re moving via a storage center where items might be packed for some time
