One of the most popular peaks in Nepal is Island Peak. Island Peak climbing expedition is mostly popular among novice climbers who wish to get into mountaineering. Climbers can gain experience in mountain climbing with the Island Peak Climb expedition. First-time climbers can make it to the top of Island Peak with preparation and determination. Similarly, it is also an ideal peak for experienced climbers who wants to climb 8000m peaks.

Standing at 6,189m, Island Peak is called so because of its location in the middle of the Chhukung valley. It resembles an island on a sea of ice. It is also known by the name Imja Tse, but Island Peak remains the favorite. With few technical sections and a straightforward route, this peak can be summitted in about 2 weeks. You can admire breathtaking views of some of the highest mountains in the world, with some 6000m and 7000m peaks in the Everest region.

Island Peak lies in the most popular trekking region of Nepal: the Everest region of Nepal, on the Nepalese – Tibetan border. You can do both Everest Base Camp Trek and Island Peak Climbing. You can certainly hike up to Kala Patthar and later head to the Island Base Camp to summit the peak. This will serve as the best acclimatization practice for the climb. That being said, you can go for just the peak climbing. The best itinerary for the Island Peak Climbing entails 14 days with two days of acclimatization and a pre-climb training day.

One of the frequently asked questions about Island peak climbing is: How difficult is the Island Peak Climb in Nepal? Although I’ve said that novice climbers can try this peak, you must know that Island Peak is NOT a trekking Peak. It is better to acquire some mountaineering skills before taking on this climb. You need to be physically fit with endurance level to ascend to 6000m altitude. Island Peak is more challenging than the popular Mera Peak. Climbers need to be ready for strenuous ascent to the Island Peak. But one can do it.

It is imperative that you are guided by a professional climbing leader with at least a decade of experience. This counts a lot when it comes to the success of ascent. The climbing leader will be there to guide you through the strenuous ascent and final push. He will be the one to access the weather window and the overall condition for the climb. In other words, he will be the guru for your expedition. From fixing ropes to setting route, the leader will be accountable for the successful summit.

To get to the top of the peak, you must first fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and hike for a couple of days to Chukkung and Island Peak Base Camp before the final push. The itinerary would take 14 days in total for the summit from Kathmandu and back to Kathmandu. This incredible journey through the Everest Region must include an acclimatization hike before you take on Island Peak. The best acclimatization spots in the Everest region are Namche Bazar and Chukung.

Climbing this peak is definitely challenging but doable. You will have to trek through the popular route in the Everest region and head to Chukung and Island Peak Base Camp. Please make sure that your itinerary has at least 2 acclimatization days in Namche and Chukung. It is better to do pre-climb training before the final push. The training will help you get along the climbing gears and basic skills for the final push. You will practice your rappelling and belaying skills required for the ascent.

You need a good level of fitness, good physical conditioning with endurance level. Ideally, you will need to trek for 6-7 hours a day for a couple of days before reaching the base camp. On a clear you, you will get to awe at the stunning views of mountains like Makalu, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, Mera Peak, Chamlang, and other peaks. The most difficult part of this climb is climbing a vertical wall before reaching the summit. Crossing the crevasses is also challenging. But you need not worry because the climbing leader will help you get it done.

The best time of the year to climb Island Peak are April, May, October and November. In other words, spring and autumn are the best seasons to climb peaks in Nepal. The weather conditions are ideal with little or no snowfall and hazards. You must not attempt to climb during winter or monsoon due to harsh weather conditions, heavy snowfall, and stormy weather.

You will need a permit to climb Island Peak. If you hire a travel agency, they will do this part for you. You will need the following 3 permits:

  • Island Peak Climbing Permit
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit

Now comes the important thing to discuss; the cost of Island Peak Climb.

Depending on the travel agency you choose and their services for you, the cost can range from $2000-$4000. Please be informed that the climbing cost depends on many factors like the route, duration of the expedition, permits, and accommodations.
