One of the most popular peaks in Nepal is Island Peak. Island Peak climbing expedition is mostly popular among novice climbers who wish to get into mountaineering. Although I’ve said that novice climbers can try this peak, you must know that Island Peak is NOT a trekking Peak. It is better to acquire some mountaineering skills before taking on this climb. You need to be physically fit with endurance level to ascend to 6000m altitude. Island Peak is more challenging than the popular Mera Peak. Climbers need to be ready for strenuous ascent to the Island Peak. But one can do it.
It is imperative that you are guided by a professional climbing leader with at least a decade of experience. This counts a lot when it comes to the success of ascent. The climbing leader will be there to guide you through the strenuous ascent and final push. He will be the one to access the weather window and the overall condition for the climb. In other words, he will be the guru for your expedition. From fixing ropes to setting route, the leader will be accountable for the successful summit.
To get to the top of the peak, you must first fly to Lukla from Kathmandu and hike for a couple of days to Chukkung and Island Peak Base Camp before the final push. The itinerary would take 14 days in total for the summit from Kathmandu and back to Kathmandu. This incredible journey through the Everest Region must include an acclimatization hike before you take on Island Peak. The best acclimatization spots in the Everest region are Namche Bazar and Chukung.
Climbing this peak is definitely challenging but doable. You will have to trek through the popular route in the Everest region and head to Chukung and Island Peak Base Camp. Please make sure that your itinerary has at least 2 acclimatization days in Namche and Chukung. It is better to do pre-climb training before the final push. You need a good level of fitness, good physical conditioning with endurance level. Ideally, you will need to trek for 6-7 hours a day for a couple of days before reaching the base camp. On a clear you, you will get to awe at the stunning views of mountains like Makalu, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, Mera Peak, Chamlang, and other peaks. The most difficult part of this climb is climbing a vertical wall before reaching the summit. Crossing the crevasses is also challenging. But you need not worry because the climbing leader will help you get it done.
The best time of the year to climb Island Peak are April, May, October and November. In other words, spring and autumn are the best seasons to climb peaks in Nepal. The weather conditions are ideal with little or no snowfall and hazards. You must not attempt to climb during winter or monsoon due to harsh weather conditions, heavy snowfall, and stormy weather.
