There’s not a single correct method to decide where to reside. There are numerous variables such as your budget, where the accommodation is located , and the level of modernization – consider what’s crucial to you. Use this UCAS accommodation search to see the halls available at the university that you’re interested in. Also, examine any information that your university can provide about local accommodation options for private residences too.

Here are some questions to help you in your search for a new home, and if you’re curious about which students chose where to stay, don’t hesitate to talk to students who are already at uni.

1. Do you have to be in halls for the beginning of your first year at university?

This varies – some universities are more hall-like than other. You might spend multiple years in halls, or maybe none at all. The majority of the time, halls are more popular than those in private accommodation, but there’s usually a number of rooms in universities. So consider what you would prefer.

You can find out more about each school you’re interested by reviewing the details they’ve posted on their site about accommodation.

2. Who would you like to share your life with?

The halls in which you live are assigned by the university. Although you may be able to state an interest on your application in case you meet certain requirements or wish to live with someone that you already know.

Private – you may be able to choose your own housemates to share in private accommodation, e.g. If a handful of your friends attend the same university. Most students go to private accommodations in their second yearof study, which is when they are able to live with the people they’ve grown acquainted with during their initial year. Or if you end up seeking accommodation after the application process – and consequently there’s no space in halls that are available in your first year, you may be able share a room with students who are going straight into private accommodation.

3. Where would you like to live?

Halls – are often located near the campus or and have direct student transport to your campus (with student-friendly prices). Your halls could be closer to the town centre than your campus – or they may be hidden into a quieter location, with its own facilities (like shops, a refectory, Students’ Union bar – maybe even an athletic court and gym).

Private – student houses or flats could be situated in any town – from residential areas that cater to families to vibrant areas that have nightlife or entertainment venues close by.

4. What is the length of time you would like to be there?

Halls are usually rented out for lengths of tenure that are in line with the academic year. It could be September- June for example, and then you’ll be returning home for summer before returning to school. The university you attend may offer various durations of tenancy, but get in touch with the university to find out more.

Private – the length of tenancy varies for accommodation that is private to students. It’s possible to stay for a complete calendar year if you wish to remain in your college town or city in the summer. Or you might be able to remain in the same area for a number of years when you’re satisfied with your home and the residents you share it with.

5. What shared spaces do you want to share?

Halls – you’ll either have shared bathrooms or your own en-suite shower room. You probably won’t have any outside space that is exclusive to you and your housemates. There may be green spaces or a courtyard out in the open that are shared by other student halls – or, in some cases, your halls are situated on campus.

Private student accommodation at Leicester university – You’ll likely have a shared bathroom and a private garden or courtyard which is great if you like growing things and barbecues, or just spending time outside.

Okay, now what do I do next?
