Being behind the wheel of the car can be exciting, but also nerve-wracking. In the end, even though the adventure of driving on the road is exciting however, the excitement is dampened slightly because… you know, you don’t know about what you’re actually doing! One of the things that can help to ease your mind but it’s knowing what you can expect during your first trip.

In this article we’ll walk you through exactly what’s going to occur during your first driving lesson , from beginning to end. We’ll also provide some tips to make your first driving lesson go by without any issues!

Your first driving lesson

While the length of your initial driving lesson could vary based on the choice of instructor or school of driving however, it is most likely to take about two hours. It’s more than adequate time for the instructor to teach you the basics of the cockpit drill , and take you on the roads for a brief time. If you’ve not chosen an extremely intensive plan then it’s likely that your instruction will last any longer than this.

Your instructor will of course inform you of what the duration of the class will be prior to the time. They’ll also have plans for the lesson and you won’t need to be concerned about them not being prepared.

Being picked up

After you’ve decided on an appointment date and time for the first time you drive, make sure to double-check the specifics. It’s not a good idea to have any confusion making your day a disaster! The day of the event your teacher could arrive early. Therefore, be sure to be prepared early in case of an emergency.

For your first driving test You will be required to bring:

The provisional license you have received. It’s only valid during your first driving lesson. This will permit your driving instructor to be sure that you’re legally permitted to drive.
Comfortable shoes. Wear the most comfortable, flat shoes that have a thin sole , so you are able to feel the controls comfortably.
Contact lenses or glasses. While it might sound easy, if you are required to wear one or the other be sure to remember — your class could be cut short if you forget!
An ice-cold bottle. The car will be in use for a few hours, and you’ll need to drink more water.

Lesson plan

Go to a quiet area

When your instructor has received a warm welcome from you, they’ll lead you to their vehicle. Before even thinking about taking the wheel it is important to know that you’re not going to be driving right away. For your first driving lesson the instructor will stick to the basics and will likely allow you to drive for a brief period. After you’ve completed a few more hours and your instructor is ready to allow you to drive from your workplace or home to a location of their choice.

When you’re working with a local instructor, they’ll be familiar with all the top places to learn for novice drivers. When you first start your lesson, they’ll choose an area that is quiet and peaceful that isn’t a distraction. Then, they’ll get out of the car and make you change places with them until you’re on the road.

Make yourself comfortable with the car

Before you can start the engine you must first learn the fundamentals. Actually, the majority of your time will consist of you getting comfortable with your instructor’s car, looking over the steering wheel, working out how to maneuver things in a way that is more suitable for you and learning how everything functions. All in all, it may not seem very interesting but it’s essential in helping you master driving.

The cockpit drill

When you’re on the road and your instructor is driving, they will take you through the practice in the cockpit. This will comprise instructions for safety and useful information that will help you understand how to adjust certain components of the vehicle to ensure that you’re able safely drive. While the instructor may take it in a slow manner make sure you request them to repeat any information in case you’re not certain.

This drill in the cockpit is also called DSSSM and is fairly simple after you’ve practiced it several times.

Doors. Before you set out it is important to make sure that all doors are shut and secured.
Seat. The seat needs to be adjusted so that you have access to the controls, and have good visibility over the roadway ahead, and take a look at your mirrors. It is also necessary to adjust the headrest.
Steering position. The steering wheel needs to be moved further or closer and lower or higher, based on your current position.
Seatbelt. It is imperative to buckle up before you leave the house for obvious reasons of safety.
Mirrors. In order to be able to see the road ahead and your blindspots, you’ll have to adjust the mirrors to ensure they are in your line of sight.

Your instructor will show you how to operate the controls and levers to adjust everything, and will provide you with some tips to help you to use in the future. We guarantee you’ll be able to be able to remember it like you’ve never seen it before within a matter of minutes.

Car controls

The next step is to move on to the car controls. The instructor is likely to begin with the pedals for your feet. It’s simple to identify which one is which. Just keep in mind your abbreviation CBA which stands for Clutch, Brake and Accelerator. Your instructor will explain the purpose of each pedal. The gear stick is most likely to follow, along with the handbrake.

If you are beginning to get bored with the theoretical aspects of things the instructor will likely allow you to get practical experience using the clutch. They’ll show you how to locate the biting point, and then hand over control to you in order that you are accustomed to repeating the same thing over and over. It’s possible to spend up to five minutes looking for the biting point, then letting it go for a moment before returning to it. It’s definitely a good thing to be able to do!

The lesson will then go in a brief discussion of the necessity of making sure you check your mirrors and blindspots prior to leaving. You may even have the opportunity to practice signals using indicators! (We’ll wait for a few seconds to get the audience to applaud loudly at this point.)

Get moving!

Are you worried that you’ll reach the finish line of your first driving class but not actually be able to drive? Relax! Your instructor will squeeze in some time to drive slowly around in a peaceful residential area. Although you’re unlikely to go beyond second gear however, you’ll learn the feel of the brake, accelerator as well as clutch. Also, you’ll be able to test out parking along the kerb.

While you may only have a few minutes to drive in your first lesson, keep in mind that you’ll have plenty of time to drive when you take your next lesson.

Return to home

After you’ve stopped the vehicle after applying the handbrake and shut off the engine the instructor will inform you to change positions with them. They’ll then bring you to your home or work. They’ll stop the vehicle to discuss the lesson. Although they may not get the same amount of feedback as they will after having some more lessons they’ll have some tips to share based upon the lessons they’ve had up to now.

When you’ve returned at home, it’s the time to relax and unwind. It’s finally time to get that first drive lesson done. Congratulations! You’re one step more close to passing the driving exam!

Tips to help you prepare for your first driving lessons Brierley Hill

If our guide didn’t do anything to relieve your anxiety Here are some helpful strategies to help you go to your driving test without difficulty.

Stay yourself calm

Although driving may be unfamiliar to you, that isn’t a reason to panic or stress about the first time you take a driving lesson. To begin the instructor will not rush you to the motorway for your very first lesson. They’ll keep things clean and easy as they ease you into driving. Additionally, they’re operating dual-control cars and will be able to handle the situation in the event that you make a mistake.

Keep in mind that no one is perfect.

Are you worried that your instructor might have to review everything over and over again? It’s the job of your instructor to assist you in getting familiar with the process of learning to drive. You’re attempting something new and it’s normal if you require them to guide through the process repeatedly. Your instructor has had numerous students, which means they’ll be aware of the fact that some people require longer time to master driving.

Do not worry if you’ve forgotten things

If you get out the first class and discover that you’ve lost the entire lesson Don’t be worried. It’ll take some time to become comfortable with doing the drill in the cockpit automatically like, for instance, or even getting to the point of biting with no assistance by your teacher. A few students only require an hour to be able to do a task, while others require more time to strengthen their muscles memory. Whatever the case it’s not necessary to fret if it’s taking your time to remember things.

Don’t be too quick to get ahead of yourself

We understand the desire to take to the roads vital not to rush the process. Your instructor won’t be taking their time to get annoyed with you. They’re trying to ensure that you’ve got the fundamentals out of the way before you can move on to driving. They don’t want to show you how to adjust car controls in the middle of every lesson at all.

There’s never an insensitive question

Although you may be scared by your instructor in driving to begin with, don’t be able to let that stop you from asking questions. If you’re not sure what you’re being confused about, or would like to know more about consider asking. It could mean the difference between improving your skills faster or having to learn another lesson.
