Temporarily, a waist trainer may be able to help. Although they can help slim the waist, they do not guarantee weight loss or permanent changes.
Waist trainers can be used to tighten your stomach and shape your body into an hourglass shape. These trainers are a corset but with a modern twist.

Celebrities posting pictures and encouraging endorsements on social networks may have contributed to the popularity of waist trainers. They may be endorsed by celebrities, but that does not necessarily mean they are safe and effective.

Continue reading to learn more about waist trainers and their health hazards.

A waist trainer is an unisex undergarment made of thick fabric and hard metallic boning. It is worn around the midsection and cinched with Velcro, hooks or a lacing system.

To achieve a slimmer waist, it’s meant to be worn tighter than a girdle. Although you can see results immediately, it is best to wear the garment over several months.

Corsets have existed for at least five centuries. Corsets were originally used to hide the breasts and hips of women’s bodies. Corsets were created to enhance the female form in the 1800s. They are designed to achieve the hourglass shape that requires a smaller waist and curvy hips.

The idealized small waist size became ever smaller until corsets were out of fashion due discomfort and health concerns.

Figure of the hourglass

It is possible to see a dramatic transformation in a matter of seconds.

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery blog, a waist trainer won’t drastically alter your body shape. Your waist trainer will not have any lasting effects, even if your body is able to accommodate it temporarily.

Weight loss

A waist trainer may temporarily help you lose some weight, but this is more likely due to fluid loss through sweating than fat loss.

Because your stomach is compressed, you may eat less when wearing the trainer.

This is not a sustainable or healthy way to lose weight. Even companies that sell waist trainers recommend exercising and eating a healthy diet to help you lose weight.

Some waist trainer advocates might recommend that you wear your trainer while exercising, but it is not a good idea. It can restrict your movement.

In addition, oxygen is essential for tissues and muscles, particularly during exercise. It can be difficult to inhale deeply when you have a waist trainer, making it even more difficult to continue your exercise routine.

A 2010 study evaluated the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of losing weight with a low-calorie diet. Researchers also looked into whether wearing a corset could help with weight loss over the long-term.

Even after one year, they found it feasible to eat a very low-calorie diet. The effectiveness of corsets was not evaluated by the researchers as the majority of participants gave up on them because of discomfort.

A decreased appetite

You will feel fuller faster if your stomach is squeezed. This could cause you to eat less.

To stay healthy and receive the nutrients you need, it is important to eat enough nutritious food. Your diet might not be adequate to keep you healthy if you limit the amount of food that you eat.

Better posture

A waist trainer can help you maintain a good posture. It can cause back pain and poor posture if you wear it too often.

You can also work on your waistline in other ways:

Balanced diet. Focus on whole, fresh foods and portion control. Reduce sugary snacks, beverages, and processed foods.

Regular exercise. To tone your muscles and help you lose calories, combine strength training with aerobic exercise. Personal trainers can create a program that suits your needs.

Wear less restrictive clothing. Undergarments that allow for a slimmer silhouette and better breathing are a good investment. Flexible plastic boning allows for greater movement freedom in some waist cinchers.

See your doctor. Talk to your doctor about safe and effective ways to lose weight without affecting your health.

Talk to a specialist. Ask your doctor if you are interested in having specific parts of your body changed.

Your waist trainers won’t have any long-term or dramatic effect on your body. They can cause problems if they are too tightened or overused. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are the best ways to lose weight.

A waist trainer isn’t necessary, as long as it’s not too tight.

Discuss safety and effectiveness with your primary care physician.
