Street photography can be believed to refer to taking pictures in the street. It’s not true. Street photography doesn’t require streets or even urban area, but it does. In simple words, street photography is taking photos in public spaces.

In contrast to studio photography, the street style doesn’t make any preparations before taking photos. The purpose of street photographers is to capture what is happening directly in the front of him. Be it an individual or an object an individual street photographer tries to capture the emotions or essence of the subject.

A brief background on street photography.

Street photography captures everyday life in public spaces. It is not something new that was initiated by anyone however, it is an extension of the earlier developments in other fields such as painting. From the beginning of Egyptian times, or even during modern times, such as the medieval Renaissance period, art that depicted the daily routine was widespread.

The advent of cameras allowed creative people to have an innovative method of capturing public areas. The first known street photography were taken in 1838, and were created by an French artist named Louis-Jacques Mande Daguerre. The photos were a view of city from his windows.

The first book that exclusively contained street photography was released by Scottish photographer John Thomson in 1877. The title was Street Life in London, it was released in monthly instalments of 12 months. Thomson’s work played an important part in establishing street photography as a worthy subject for photography. French photographer Eugene Atget is another noteworthy photographer who was a pioneer in early street photography. Between 1890 and 1920, Atget mostly photographed the architectural and landscape of Paris and made street photography very popular.

The realm of street photography was transformed with the advent of Leica cameras. The bright viewfinder, interchangeable lenses and overall compactness led to Leica an instant hit with photographers who could easily move around the city and snap photographs. The U.S., the popularity of street photography has frequently been associated with the growing popularity of jazz music as both concentrate on telling the everyday life of the people. In the years 1938-41, photographer Walker Evans worked on a photograph series about his work on the New York City subway. He utilized an unnoticed camera to capture photos of people who were in public places.

It was in 1958 that American photographer Robert Frank published a book titled The Americans. The photos of the street he took were different from what was thought to be normal in the early days. Frank’s photographs were authentic pictures of the world and were generally not in focus. A majority of American photographers rescinded Frank’s book.

Later in the years, The Americans became a deeply influential book that prompted photographers to leave their comfort zones and discover new avenues in street photography. Many believe that The Americans to be one of the most influential photography books of the past century.

The growing popularity

The latter half of the 20th century and into the beginning of the 21st century saw an explosion for street photography. Cameras were less expensive and more expensive that were easily accessible to those who wanted to take pictures.
