A good night’s rest is crucial for our mental and physical well-being.

We don’t yet know the reason we sleep, but we do realize is that getting a good night’s rest is important for a range of reasons.

The body undergoes important maintenance activities while we sleep such as the repair and growth of muscles, tissues bone, blood vessels, and bones.
Poor sleep can negatively impact the immune system, and can raise the chance of developing diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure
Lack of sleep can impact the mental processes of solving problems, judgement, and learning and the ability to concentrate and finish tasks
during sleep , the brain is processing the day’s events and thoughts creates memories, and stores information
sleep is a key factor in recovery and healing. It is also important in the regulation of hormones that manage hunger and appetite
Sleep issues can impact your mood and cause stress that can impact relationships. This could lead to problems such as anxiety, depression, and depressive symptoms.

We’re all aware of how an unsatisfactory night’s rest can make us feel tired and dizzy – an ongoing lack of sleep may result in a variety of consequences, including:

Inattention and poor concentration.
Insufficient energy and issues keeping alert
decreased creativity and the ability to make decisions and resolve problems
difficulties in completing tasks and more errors
moodiness – feeling more stressed, angry and less able to deal with anxiety
Memory problems and difficulties in recalling information
issues in learning new processes and information
eating more sugary and sweet foods and weight increase
More colds and infections
slower reaction times – impacting the ability to drive safely, and increase the risk of accidents

Do we need to sleep? How much rest do we require?

The majority of adults require the equivalent of seven to nine hours rest Certain people require more, while others require less. The most important thing is to figure the amount of sleep you require to feel refreshed and awake. If you’ve been able to get enough rest, you will feel naturally awake from sleep and relaxed and refreshed.

Age is a factor in the amount of sleep a person requires. In general, we require less sleep as we get older. Seniors could require less than 7 hours of sleep and are more restful while a teenager might require more, up to 10, or 11, hours. Lifestyle is also an influence on how much sleep you require – those with children who are young or who have very physical or active jobs might need to sleep earlier and have more rest.

What is more important than the amount of sleep you get will be the level of sleep. Dependent on short naps or breaking sleep may be a sign that you’re not attaining an adequate amount of sleep (Non-REM stage 3). The time of deep sleep is that the body heals itself and reserves energy for the following day. In order to wake up feeling rejuvenated and energetic, it’s important to have enough rest.
