The year was 1839 when Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype. It was the first successful commercially-produced photographic process. Daguerreotype was extremely expensive and time-consuming, yet it was able to create of stunningly detail-oriented photographs.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, a variety of new photography techniques were created, like the wet plate collodion method and the dry plate collodion method. These processes were significantly more efficient and cost-effective than daguerreotype and enabled creating more artistic and expressive images.

In the twentieth century, photographic gained recognition as a legitimate art form art. Photographers like Ansel Adams, and Edward Weston created stunning images of nature. Other photographers, including Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans utilized photography to record the political and social issues.

The mid 20th century was when photography began to explore new techniques and styles. Photographers like Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand made candid photos of daily life.
