Finding your perfect home

We’ll assist you in deciding whether you want to stay in a hall, rental or staying at your home

Going to college could be the first time you move away from home and get the first time you experience independence. Choosing where to reside at university can be among the most thrilling parts of the build up.

It can be difficult to choose where you’d like to reside. Are you allowed to live in university rooms, private accommodations or live at your house?

This guide will help you make the next step toward the beginning of your university journey. Learn what your alternatives are and the pros and cons of choosing student halls, private rental or living at home.

Halls for students

Many universities offer halls for students in their first year. They are either on-campus or close to the campus. The flats are typically separate with six to eight student rooms per apartment, meaning you’ll have the chance to interact with other students and make friends as soon as you get settled in.

Student halls are a great option for being at the forefront of your university experience. Because they’re close to the campus, you’ll have no problem getting to your lectures at a reasonable time.

If you’re in the process of preparing for that first academic year of university and you’re a student, you’ll probably find university halls the easiest accommodation option to choose from.

What’s included

The student halls’ flats typically come with internet and bill payments included, making the process of calculating your rent easy. The rooms are fully furnished with a desk, bed and storage so you’re able to move right into. You are able to bring your own television, video games or posters.

Halls are managed by the University, who frequently have security teams and residential assistance at any moment you require it.

Shared spaces

You’ll be sharing a kitchen with fellow students if you opt for self-catered student residences and have access to the canteen in case you want rooms that are catered. Most student hall rooms have bathroom facilities with an en-suite. However, there are some that have shared bathrooms, therefore look out for this when you are researching the best place to live.

Private renting

If you’d like to live with your friends in a shared house or you want to live alone it is possible to find a private rental that’s not run by the school. Private rental gives you more choice of the place you reside and who you reside with, but you’ll also have more responsibility.

What’s included?

Private accommodation requires you to handle your rent and other expenses by negotiating directly with the tenant, and not with the university. There are a few landlords who include bills and internet in their rent either – so make sure you keep an eye out for this when you’re searching for a new place to live in.

Location

You must also consider the distance you’d like for your journey to get there and what public transportation is readily available. Student halls are often situated close to the campus, but private accommodations are typically further away.
Being with friends

A lot of students live privately during their third and fourth year of university, so they share a house with friends they made during their first year. This is also an option for the first year, especially when you already have friends at your college.

Living in a shared home

If you don’t have any friends to share your space with, but do not prefer living in student halls, you can find rooms in private shared homes which are available in the first week season. Some of the rooms will be in student homes which means you’ll be able to get to know students from different stages of studies.

Lodging

You can also find private rooms within the homes of people living in cities. This is referred to as lodging, and you’ll be known as a lodger. You’ll live with the landlord and , sometimes, their family. It is likely that you will be one of the students in the house, however some landlords have more that one spare room they lease out.

A room that you can rent in the home of a friend can be an ideal opportunity to meet the people of the city and their friends, which can allow you to expand your social circle beyond university.

Home-based living

If you do not decide to move away for uni it is possible to live at your current home. You won’t have to share a room with other students, but you’ll still take part in uni life.

The option of staying at home at university is an excellent method to save money on food costs as well as rent and other expenses particularly if you don’t need to pay rent at home. But you might have less freedom when you are at home, and you may have fewer opportunities to develop your independence.
