The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) has commissioned a literature review (Hawkes 2012) as well as a study of Mentoring women’s career paths within higher learning (Quinn 2012) and concluded that mentorship offers a range of benefits for mentors, mentees in general and HEIs alike.

In Quinn’s study Quinn found the following to be the most common benefits to the mentees of his study:

greater opportunities and the possibility of remaining in the institution
Higher salaries
more productive and improved time management
more success in securing greater success in securing external research grant
Professional and personal development as well as improved job-related wellbeing self-esteem and confidence and a more balanced work-life
training for the future, and higher career aspirations
developed networking skills

fresh perspectives and perspectives on your faculty
Potential for networking
Experience in staff management and development

Funding bodies are increasingly valuing the benefits of a mentoring program and frequently encourage staff at the top to become mentors
developing mentoring/coaching skills

Furthermore, Quinn identified the following as general advantages of mentors:

personal satisfaction, and particularly satisfaction from watching junior staff advance
