It may be due to soft tissues, such as the tongue, getting in the way of an individual’s airways, or due to fat accumulation.

How can dentists manage sleep apnea by using dental appliances

One of the most popular methods employed to treat sleep apnea is through the use of oral devices. They are utilized to keep the airways of the patient open throughout sleep. The most popular oral devices used to treat sleep apnea comprise tongue-retaining devices, vestibular shields and tongue strips.

Certain of these devices, like the tongue-retaining device help to keep the tongue of the patient in the correct position throughout sleep, so that it doesn’t restrict their airway. Others, such as the mandibular advance device, are designed to keep the jaw of the patient in the correct position during sleep to ensure that their airways remain open. The advantages in treating sleep apnea using an oral appliance, instead of investigating other treatment options such as the continuous positive pressure (CPAP) device, are the following.

The advantages of oral appliances to sleep apnea

User-friendly: Many of the dental appliances such as a Mandibular Advancement Device that treat sleep apnea are simple to use and can be customized to fit the mouth of the patient. They are simple to operate lightweight and simple to transport and store. They can be easily placed inside the mouth of the patient, keeping their airways open, permitting them to sleep with no interruptions to breathing.

Comfort: The dental devices that aid in keeping the airway of a patient open when they sleep can cause minimal discomfort because of their customized design. The appliance is custom-made to fit the person’s airway and jaw, tongue and teeth.

Reduces snoring sounds: Snoring sounds originate from obstructions in the airway and are usually the result of sleep apnea. The mouthpieces used to treat sleep apnea allow for the opening of airways and allow for more space. Certain devices, such as neck straps help keep the mouth of the patient closed which forces the patient to breathe through their nose. This helps reduce snoring noises when you sleep.

The non-surgical option: Oral appliances do not cause permanent changes to someone’s teeth and doesn’t require any surgery. Surgery treatment for sleep apnea is generally considered as a last option.

Simple treatment of sleep apnea using the use of an appliance for oral sleep is just as simple as placing the device in the mouth and then going to sleep. The appliance should be cleaned following each use to avoid the accumulation of bacteria. Other methods to control sleep apnea, such as CPAP machines, have to be installed before they are used.
